Readability
How easily written content can be read and understood.
How hard the writing is to get through.
What It Is
Readability sits on the Content side of the work, in the Craft area. What it actually refers to is how easily written content can be read and understood.
It is something measured and compared over time, so one reading in isolation tells you almost nothing. That is the version worth keeping, because it survives contact with a real project.
How It's Used
Most of the time Readability is used in editorial planning, briefs and the day-to-day work of publishing. It normally appears alongside Plain Language, Body Copy and Editorial Standard. The practical test is whether it is measured the same way each period, against something.
Why It Matters
Ignoring Readability rarely fails loudly — it fails slowly. When it is unclear, output goes up and effect goes sideways. Clarity here removes a surprising amount of downstream argument.
Picture a speedometer. It tells you how fast, not whether you are going the right way. How hard the writing is to get through.
Termshift™
How the meaning shifts depending on who is using it, and where.
Professionally, Readability carries the narrow meaning: how easily written content can be read and understood.
Explained to someone with no marketing background, Readability is how hard the writing is to get through.
The Bottom Line
Treat Readability as a decision, not a description. How hard the writing is to get through.
